Camp Start-Up
A launch pad for big ideas

2010 Dates and Locations

July 6 – 16 (for girls only)

Camp Start-Up for Girls, Florida Gulf Coast University, Ft. Myers, FL

Established just over 10 years ago, Florida Gulf Coast University (“FGCU”) is a public university located in Ft. Myers, FL , a premiere destination for sun-seekers and the gateway to the Captiva Islands, Sanibel and more. With 400 acres set aside for environmental preservation, the beautiful 760-acre campus meshes an appreciation for the outdoors with the best of modern day technology.  Campers will live in North Lake Village and enjoy apartment-style housing and high speed internet connections in each dorm room.  They’ll dine in the campus dining hall, swim in one of two swimming pools at the University’s Aquatics Center, and enjoy impromptu beach volleyball games on the shores of the 80-acre recreation lake adjacent to their dorms.

Florida Gulf Coast University is only 15 minutes from Southwest Florida International Airport.  Campers choosing to fly in to Ft. Myers will be met at the airport by a Camp $tart-Up staff member. More about getting to the University.

Field Trips Include

  • Educational Concerns for Hunger Organizations (ECHO), a non-profit that provides technical support and training to the people who help poor farmers around the world.
  • Chico's, a specialty retailer of private branded, sophisticated, casual-to-dressy clothing, intimates, accessories, and other non-clothing items founded in Florida

July 11 – 21 (concurrent sessions)

Camp Start-Up for Girls, Scripps College, Claremont, CA
Camp Start-Up for Boys, Scripps College, Claremont, CA

Scripps' beautiful 37-acre campus, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is located at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in Claremont, CA, 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Campers will live in campus residence halls, dine in campus dining halls and swim in the recently completed 25-meter outdoor swimming pool. Offering campers an intimate setting amidst the vast Claremont College Consortium, the Scripps campus is just a 10-minute walk from downtown Claremont, a popular destination spot during Camp $tart-Up’s afternoon optional time.

Scripps College is just outside of Los Angeles. We suggest campers land at Ontario Airport. It’s about 20 minutes from campus. They will be met there by a Camp $tart-Up staff member. More about getting to Scripps here.

Field Trips Include

  • American Apparel, a vertically-integrated clothing manufacturer, distributor, and retailer of one of the hippest clothing brands based in downtown Los Angeles
  • Dogswell, a manufacturer of healthy and all natural pet foods
  • The Living Christmas Tree Company, a company that rents living Christmas trees to families as an alternative to cut or artificial trees

July 28 – August 7 (concurrent sessions)

Camp Start-Up for Girls, Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Wilbraham, MA
Camp Start-Up for Boys, Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Wilbraham, MA

Founded originally in early 1804, Wilbraham & Monson Academy, a private secondary school located just east of the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, offers campers a quintessential New England setting. Today, the Academy offers a recently installed state-of-the-art stock trading floor on which campers will experience what it’s really like to trade stocks. Campers will live in campus residence halls, dine in the campus dining hall, and swim in the Academy’s 25 meter indoor swimming pool. Campers will also have an afternoon of shopping and sightseeing in nearby Northampton, home to Smith College and renowned for its vibrant downtown.

For Wilbraham and Monson Academy campers, we suggest Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT. It’s about 45 minutes from campus and a Camp $tart-Up staff member will meet campers at the airport. More about getting to Wilbraham and Monson Academy here or about accommodations.
